Colorectal Clinical Nurse Specialist

Year Qualified

October 2003

Experience & Background

At the age of 17 I started working as a carer in a Nursing Home while studying Health and Social Care at College. I very quickly realised that a nursing career was something I wanted to pursue.

After qualifying as a nurse in 2003 I worked for a number of years as a Staff Nurse on a Colorectal Surgical ward. This role involved complex care planning for the acute surgical patient, preparing patients for surgery as well as carrying out post op care.

During my time on the ward I progressed to Ward Sister and developed a keen interest in the care and management of the Colorectal Cancer patient.

In 2012 the opportunity to become a Colorectal Clinical Nurse Specialist arose and after being successful in application I have continued in this role since.

My main duties include providing patients/relatives/carers with information and support through diagnosis and treatment, facilitating communication and decision making between them and the multidisciplinary team while maintaining a high quality of care through effective leadership and advanced clinical practice.
