Stoma Care

If you have been told that you may be having a stoma (colostomy, ileostomy, urostomy) formed during your surgery (even if there is only a small possibility that you will need one forming), you will be referred to the Stoma Care Service.

What is the Stoma Care Service?

The Stoma Care Service is a team of specialist nurses with a valuable insight into the needs of stoma patients, both physically and psychologically. They understand that having surgery and living with a stoma is life changing for the patient, relatives and carers.

That is why they are with you at every stage of your journey to offer advice and ongoing support. They will also work collaboratively with other professionals to ensure you receive the best possible care.

What does the Stoma Care Service Provide?

The service is available to all ages, from babies to the elderly, and delivers care in hospital and in the community setting providing: 

Support for all stoma related problems.

Pre and post-operative care.

Teaching of practical stoma care in the hospital setting and following discharge home as needed.

All stoma related prescriptions.

Education, counselling and management advice.

Annual reviews from a choice of locations across the area.

Ad hoc reviews as required.

Home visits (where required for clinical reasons)

Home visits will be offered following discharge from hospital to suit your requirements. These visits will be to establish that you are coping with your new situation and discuss with you issues which may have arisen since your discharge from hospital.

Availability of service

The service is available Monday to Friday 8-00am –6-00pm (excluding bank holidays) and is specialist nurse led with support from administration assistants. If you have a problem or have any concerns, please contact the team on 01270  612443.

The team operates a prescribing hub which is managed and led by Stoma Care Specialist Nurses.
