Essential critical infrastructure work is currently ongoing as part of our ambitious programme to create a health and care neighbourhood in Crewe, with a new Leighton Hospital at its heart.

To facilitate the future construction of the hospital, high-voltage electrical cabling will be installed along several key routes in the surrounding area.

The programme, outlined below, has been co-ordinated in close partnership with Cheshire East Council, and is designed to minimise disruption to the local community. A comprehensive traffic management plan has been developed by SP Energy Networks and its contractor Opus Utility Solutions, to help maintain traffic flow throughout the duration of the works:

  • Brian Palin Way: Friday 6 June - Thursday 9 July - Road closure - Work completed
  • Totty's Hall Way: Monday 23 June - Friday 18 July - Rolling traffic lights - Work completed
  • Totty's Hall Way (junction with Bob Brown Way): Monday 21 July to Sunday 27 July – single file traffic roundabout - Work completed
  • Bob Brown Way: Monday 28 July - Sunday 17 August - Road closure - Work completed
  • Flowers Lane: Monday 13 October - Road closure - Work completed
  • Flowers Lane: Monday 5 January 2026 - Sunday 11 January 2026 - Road closure between Bob Brown Way roundabout and Bradfield Road roundabout - Work complete
  • Middlewich Road: Monday 19 January 2026 - Friday 27 February 2026 - Temporary rolling traffic lights will be in operation between the Crewe GIS substation and the Brian Palin Way roundabout. Please note, traffic lights will be positioned in circa 150m sections of the road, not the entire highlighted stretch, and will move northwards as work on each phase of is completed. Approximate dates for each phase will be shared in due course.

Please note, all dates may be subject to change. Any changes will be published on this page and communicated in advance.

Should you have any questions concerning the work in the area, please contact 0800 138 9179 (between 9am and 5.00pm, Monday to Friday) or email crewecapacityworks@spenenquiries.co.uk.

Additional roadworks

The Trust has been advised that Cheshire East Council will undertake a separate programme of road surface dressing, starting in May and running through into the summer, with a series of road closures.

Full details about these works can be found on the council’s website.
