Mid Cheshire Hospitals is offering work experience placements to inspire young people to take on jobs in NHS support services.

It wants local students to gain valuable life skills while they learn more about roles in areas such as human resources, recruitment, estates and facilities, and IT.

The NHS Foundation Trust is inviting applications from young people in school years 11 to 13 for the new ‘Aspire to Work in Support Services’ programme. The deadline is Friday, 26 January, and students must be 16 years old or above.

Susan Hossent, Recruitment Manager, said: “People may not realise it, but there are more than 350 potential career options in healthcare. By working closely with local schools and colleges, we aim to raise awareness of these job opportunities.

“Our new Aspire work experience programmes provide local students with a great opportunity to develop their independent working and employability skills. They can get out of the classroom and into our Trust to have a taste of an NHS career.

“These young people will develop new skills, learn about their strengths and areas for development, increase their confidence, and hopefully gain an insight into which career path they want to follow.”

The work experience placements are limited and will last for one to five days.

Students will be based at the Trust’s hospitals – Leighton Hospital in Crewe, Victoria Infirmary in Northwich or Elmhurst Intermediate Care Centre in Winsford – or at Infinity House in Crewe.

The Trust currently has two other work experience programmes:

  • Aspire to be a Doctor, which is aimed at students from local sixth form schools and colleges who are studying subjects which will enable them to apply to medical school.
  • Aspire to be an Allied Health Professional, which is aimed at students from local sixth form schools and colleges who are studying subjects which will enable them to progress to university to study subjects in podiatry, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, or speech and language therapy.

Applications for these programmes are currently closed and are expected to reopen later in 2024.

The Trust’s Inspiring Futures team works with the Cheshire and Warrington Pledge Partnership to organise opportunities and events so young people can learn more about careers in the NHS.

The Trust does not offer placements for students under the age of 16 or accept enquiries for work experience outside of the advertised application windows.
