We were delighted our Elevate Leadership Programme, developed in collaboration with East Cheshire Trust and Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, was recognised at the recent HSJ Awards Ceremony in London.

In 2022, the three Trusts came together to develop the Elevate Leadership Programme, taking positive action to support colleagues from minority ethnic communities to explore their leadership potential, and progress into leadership roles where their diverse voice and experience helps shape decision making at all levels.

The impact of this programme has been recognised following a submission titled Diverse Voices in Leadership in the NHS Race Equality Award category,at the HSJ Awards which took place on Thursday 16th November.

Ian Howarth, Workforce Equality Diversity & Inclusion Lead at Mid Cheshire Hospitals and East Cheshire NHS Trust, said: “The Elevate Leadership Development Programme was conceived to support colleagues of Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic heritage in exploring their leadership aspirations within the NHS. The programme was designed through authentic dialogue and collaboration with staff networks and other key stakeholders, addressing barriers related to skills development, discrimination, and the lack of visible role models.”  Many former delegates have already gone onto achieve success and develop their careers since being involved with the programme and the more diverse representation and voices we have in leadership roles, the more informed decisions we’re able to make, decisions which will benefit both our staff and patients.

“I’m delighted that the programme has been recognised at a national level following it’s significant success, with delegates securing promotions and taking on managerial roles, leading teams, and making daily operational decisions.”

Congratulations to all the finalists and winners announced during the ceremony and thank you to colleagues involved in our Elevate Leadership Programme.
