About this service

Paediatric Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy Services provide targeted and specialist intervention for babies, children, and young people from birth to 16 years of age (16-19 with an EHCP). The service aims to assist children to achieve their maximum physical and functional potential by working alongside children, their families, and members of the multidisciplinary teams.

Once referred to a therapist the child will be assessed and, if appropriate, an individual goal-orientated treatment programme will be devised. The goals will be reviewed and evaluated at agreed intervals.

Therapists will work, where appropriate, as part of the multidisciplinary team to promote the child's development. Interventions may focus on aspects of function such as: gross motor (mobility), fine motor and daily living skills.

Physiotherapists will assess specific musculoskeletal problems in children up to 10 years of age. This may include provision of a treatment programme and review of progress.

Children will be seen in a location suitable for their needs and the intervention required. This includes input into special schools.

Paediatric Occupational Therapy for Functional Skills and Motor Co-ordination

The CCICP Paediatric Occupational Therapy service includes support for functional skill and motor skill difficulties. This aspect of the service is a tiered service consisting of Universal, Targeted and Specialist Tiers.

Universal Tier:

Prior to referral, please access the universal tier (further down this page) for advice and strategies to support the child/young person, such as Washing and Dressing Skills, Sensory Processing, Fine Motor Skills, and Equipment.

Please complete a minimum of 12 weeks strategy implementation of the universal advice and complete this diary sheet (this will automatically download as a Word document when clickedto provide evidence of the activities and strategies used to address the child’s/young person’s needs.

Targeted Tier:

If the child/young person continues to display difficulties with functional skills and/or motor co-ordination, after a minimum of 12 weeks strategy implementation, a Paediatric Occupational Therapy referral can be made, to access the targeted tier of our service.

Please consider that children/young people should only be referred if they are able to engage in the assessment process. The targeted tier involves a parent/carer telephone appointment.

If an Occupational Therapy referral is appropriate, please complete and submit this online referral form (right click & select 'open in new tab' to keep browsing this page) with full parental/carer consent.

Evidence of 12-week strategy implementation at universal tier level is required for targeted tier referrals to be accepted. On your referral form, please include details on how universal strategies have been used to address the child’s/young person’s needs and email the diary sheet to our Therapy Booking Team – this information will support the referral triage process. Incomplete/insufficient referrals will not be accepted and will be returned to the referrer.

Important:

Before completing a referral, please rate the below 2 questions with parent(s)/carer(s) from 1-8: With 1 being not worried at all/no difficulty to 8 being highly worried/very severe difficulties.

The ratings must be entered on the referral Consent page:

  • How worried are you about your child's co-ordination, fine/gross motor difficulties and/or difficulties with activities of daily living?
  • How much difficulty do you think your child is having with their co-ordination, fine/gross motor skills, and/or daily living activities?

Supporting information:

  • After you have submitted the referral form, the diary sheet should be emailed as supporting information to our Therapy Booking Team.
  • You can also email other supporting information, such as clinic letters, EHCPs, hospital therapy discharge care plans, and/or other professional reports (with parental/carer consent).
  • Please ensure that the child’s/young person’s full name and date of birth are on each document.
  • Email supporting information to ccicp.therapyservices@mcht.nhs.uk

Specialist Tier:

Following completion of the universal and targeted tiers, the Occupational Therapist may offer specialist tier intervention. This is likely to involve a clinic assessment appointment and could include standardised assessments, such as motor skills and handwriting assessments, as clinically indicated.

Further advice:

Further universal advice and discussion is available to parent/carers, health professionals and education professionals via the Paediatric Occupational Therapy Advice Line. This is open from 12pm to 2pm every Wednesday during term time, 07584 386880.

All referrals that meet service criteria will be offered an appointment and should be seen within 18 weeks. Referrals triaged as urgent will be seen within 10 working days from point of triage.
