We are currently seeing extremely high demand for our services and are working hard to make sure patients are seen as quickly as possible.
We have tried and tested plans in place to help manage periods of high pressure, and ensuring safe care for patients continues to be our first priority. Unfortunately this means that patients accessing our services may experience longer waits than normal. You can see our A&E waiting times here.
Please don’t come to A&E unless it’s an emergency, critical or a life-threatening situation.
If you, or someone you care for, becomes unwell and you’re not sure where to go, use NHS 111 to get the right care in the right place – including at your GP practice, pharmacy, or self-care at home. Call, go online or use the NHS App. Info: https://
If you are bringing a loved one home from the hospital, please follow simple steps to help support them on their return home, including:
- Make sure they have their prescription medicines available, or check if they need help picking them up
- If your loved one needs help while GP practices or pharmacies are closed, NHS 111 is here for them
- Ensure they have enough to eat and drink
- Make sure there are no trip hazards to prevent falls
- Ensure their house is adequately heated and that they have clean bedding
- Provide emotional support – leaving hospital can sometimes feel overwhelming
- Know who to contact if you need help
If you’re not able to care for them, and/or need help to do so, then you have a right to a carer’s assessment to have your needs considered too. Check what your local council can offer. Find their websites using the online postcode tool at gov.uk/

The public can also play their part this winter by taking simple measures to stay well, such as getting seasonal vaccines when invited to, keeping warm, staying active, looking out for others, and choosing the right service when they need help. Please visit our winter wellbeing page for more information.
As ever, please be assured that the NHS is here for you. We'd urge anyone with health concerns to continue to come forward for care.
