The Cheshire and Merseyside Surgical Centre at the Victoria Infirmary in Northwich has been recognised for high standards of sustainability and environmental performance.
The facility, which recently celebrated its one year anniversary, has been awarded a BREEAM New Construction Final Certificate with an ‘Excellent’ rating.
BREEAM stands for Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method. It assesses a building across areas such as management, health and wellbeing, energy, and land use and ecology. It also assessed a travel plan, which was developed specifically for the surgical centre.
The achievement is an important milestone for Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (MCHFT) as it reflects its commitment to delivering modern healthcare facilities that support patients, staff, and the environment.
The Cheshire and Merseyside Surgical Centre boasts two advanced operating theatres, one dedicated to cataract surgery, and the other functioning as a multi-specialty theatre accommodating orthopaedics, ENT, dermatology, urology, and pain management.
It is also a cataract centre of excellence, and a regional hub for outstanding cataract care. This is helping to reduce the number of people waiting for cataract surgery, as the centre provides referral to treatment in three weeks or less.

"The Cheshire and Merseyside Surgical Centre is already delivering real benefits for patients through improved access to high-quality surgical care, and this recognition demonstrates our commitment to creating sustainable, modern environments that support both patient care and the future NHS estate."
MCHFT received £23m of funding from NHS England, via NHS Cheshire and Merseyside Integrated Care Board, to create the state-of-the-art facility.
