We are continuing to respond to the COVID-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic, which has had a major effect on NHS services. The need to create capacity to care for COVID-19 patients led to the postponement of non-emergency care to treat patients who are critically ill with the virus.

We have been working to re-introduce routine care, including diagnostic procedures and operations when we are able. Whilst we work to safely treat more patients, COVID-19 has constrained our capacity to treat as many patients as we did before the pandemic.

Your safety is our first priority. COVID-19 has changed the way we work and we have put robust infection control measures in place to ensure services are provided within a safe environment. However, waiting lists have grown and it will take some time before services fully recover.

We are sorry that you may have to wait longer for your treatment.

If you were on a waiting list before the COVID-19 outbreak, you will still be on a waiting list, unless we have written to advise you differently or you have contacted the hospital to request to be removed from the waiting list. GPs have continued to refer patients for hospital treatment during the pandemic and they have also been added to hospital waiting lists.

We are regularly reviewing the waiting lists very carefully. Patients with the highest clinical need will be seen first, followed by those who have been waiting the longest. We know some people’s conditions could deteriorate so whereas their care might not have been a priority to start with, that could change whilst patients are waiting for treatment.

Where possible, we are using video and telephone consultations to increase the numbers of patients we can treat and also to reduce the need for patients to visit hospital. We will only ask you to attend the hospital when we feel it is necessary, such as when tests, examinations or surgery is needed.

If we need to make any changes to your appointment we will try to let you know well in advance and we will try not to cancel or postpone any appointments or procedures that have been booked.
