Information about your treatment

You will be kept fully informed about your treatment. However you will have the opportunity to ask any other questions to which you need an answer. You should know exactly what is going to happen before any 'procedure' (investigation or operation) is carried out. If you need any further information at any time please ask the Doctor or Ward Sister. Do not be embarrassed to ask the staff to explain anything you do not understand.

If tests are planned, you may want to ask:

  • What is the purpose of the test?
  • How accurate is it?
  • What are the risks,if any?
  • What will happen during the test?
  • How soon will the results be available?

If surgery is planned, you may want to ask:

  • If I need pain killers what will I be able to have?
  • What does the operation entail?
  • How much improvement in my condition can I expect?
  • What sort of anaesthetic will I have (local, general, spinal)?
  • What after effects should I expect?
  • What are the risks and possible complications?
  • How long will I have to stay in bed after the operation?
  • How long is the normal recovery time and when will I be able to go back to work?

Other questions will depend on your particular condition.
