Covid-19 and Cancer Information

We understand this is a really worrying time for patients, families and all those affected by cancer during the coronavirus pandemic. The Trust and clinical teams wish to provide you with the assurance that, despite this fast-changing situation, we are here to support you as best we can during this difficult time. 

In light of the developments, we have had to work a little bit differently to allow us to keep you as safe as we possibly can. Your safety is our priority.

Please do not come to the hospital unless it is absolutely necessary.


Outpatient Clinics

  • The Trust has reduced the volume of patients attending the hospital in person for clinic reviews
  • Your clinical teams have carefully considered all those that could be reviewed via the telephone. This is to reduce the risk of you catching the virus and allow you to social distance for as long as possible
  • For patients not suitable for telephone assessment, the Trust has reduced footfall in the hospital limiting it to just patients only.


Whilst we recognise this is difficult and sometimes hard, especially in cancer care, please be assured it is to increase safety at all times. We have worked hard to particularly keep the Macmillan Cancer Unit as an area that would replicate areas of isolation and maintain the social distancing you require to keep you safe.


Chemotherapy/Immunotherapy treatments 

Your clinical teams have been assessing every one of you on treatment and have carefully considered the benefits of your treatment against the risk of the virus and the impact that would have on you. 

We are continuing to deliver as much chemotherapy/immunotherapy as possible for those who cannot safely defer or delay their treatment. 

Blood tests for those on treatment have been moved to the Macmillan Cancer Unit on Monday and Tuesday. 


Surgery   

Our surgical teams have been working collaboratively with the Trust to ensure all cases are considered under the guidance we have been given nationally.  

All operations that can be safely delayed utilising other tactics, have and will be.   

We are working hard to explore all avenues that are safe to ensure those who need surgery are considered as a priority. 


Suspected Cancer Referrals

For patients referred in from their GP with symptoms suspected of cancer, our clinicians are carefully vetting them to ensure you receive the most suitable and safe diagnostic tests. 

Those patients who can safely wait are being kept on a central list so we make sure people don’t lose track. 


Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) 

What if I have an appointment at the hospital?  

If you have an appointment at the hospital, this will have been decided as the best course of action for your treatment. We will review your condition and if we can get you to the unit safely, we will ask you to come in.  

I am worried that I will have to enter the hospital

We have a separate entrance to the hospital, which allows you to be isolated. You will only encounter other cancer patients or the cancer nurses on your visit and you will not have to enter the hospital if you do not wish too.  

What if I need to have blood taken?  

We won’t be asking you to enter the hospital to have your blood test - we now have a room in the Unit where your bloods will be taken. This will only be on Mondays and Thursdays at the current time, but we are looking to expand this. 


For those on treatment

If you have symptoms that are concerning and a temperature of 37.5 degrees you must continue to contact your hotline number. This is really important so you can be guided on what the next course of action should be.

Specialist Nursing Teams 

Our specialist nursing teams are continuing to provide support to you and your families and can still be contacted via their usual contact numbers. Our specialist nurses are available during the hours of 8am - 4pm, Monday to Friday. If there is no answer, please leave a message and they will return your call but please be aware this may not always be on the same day. 


Macmillan Information and Support Service   

The Macmillan Information and Support Service continues to be open as a telephone service for patients with cancer and their families on 01270 273603. 

Benefits services in Cheshire East and West also remain open. For enquiries ring the Macmillan Information and Support Service who will pass your details onto the Macmillan Benefits providers. 

The Macmillan Information and Support Service is available during the hours of 9am - 4pm, Monday to Friday. If there is no answer, please leave a message and they will return your call but please be aware this may not always be on the same day.
