Mid Cheshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (MCHFT), in association with Health Education England, has been announced as the winner of a national award from the Health Service Journal (HSJ).

 The Value in Healthcare Awards showcase outstanding efficiency and improvement in the NHS, and the Trust’s eHandover project has been presented with the Value and Improvement in Medical Technology award.

 In January 2013, a new method of clinical handover was introduced across the medical wards at Leighton Hospital.  Designed to make patient handover safer and more efficient, the eHandover (electronic handover) system has helped the Trust to provide an improved level of safe, high quality patient care.

Designed by the Trust’s Acute Physicians in association with Health Education England and external software development company Ascribe, eHandover was introduced to replace the paper-based systems that were used to manage the clinical handover of patients which takes place during shift changes.  The system improves patient safety and reduces the risks associated with breakdowns in communication that can occur during traditional patient handovers.

Dr Shirley Hammersley, Clinical Lead for Acute Medicine, explains: “The new system centralises key patient information and makes it accessible to those staff that need it.  Medical staff are able to see information on all patients, regardless of their location within the hospital, enabling informed decisions to be made and helping to effectively plan, prioritise and manage patient care.  By enabling quicker treatment, we can ensure that our patients are getting the right care at the right time, which is obviously a huge benefit for everyone.

 “Since its launch, the system has received very positive feedback from staff.  They appreciate the difference that it has made to both patients and colleagues alike, and as a result of the project’s success we are looking to adopt the system and its principles wider across the organisation.”
