The Postgraduate Medical Centre at Leighton Hospital aims to play the leading role in providing, coordinating and facilitating high quality Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education (PGMDE) and Continuing Medical Education (CME). The ultimate aim is to improve the quality of health care for the population covered by the local health care services, by PGMDE (which focuses on training of junior staff) and CME (which targets senior staff both Consultant and non-Consultant career grade staff).
Students in the Southern Sector of the University of Manchester are based at Leighton Hospital and oversight of their education also falls within the domain of the education team in the Postgraduate Medical Centre.
Service
A wide range of activities are organised in the centre and details of these are published on the notice boards, as are details of postgraduate courses and meetings held elsewhere. Mersey Deanery also advertises a wide range of courses. For more information click on the web site:- www.merseydeanery.ac.uk. Postgraduate lectures are held at 1.00pm each Friday lunchtime during term time, preceded by a buffet lunch at 12.30pm for those attending the lecture. These meetings are open to a multidisciplinary audience.
GP vocational training takes place on Thursday afternoons in term time. Further details can be obtained from Dr Sanj Shridhar or Dr. Debbie Ford, via the Postgraduate Medical Centre.
Twice-yearly “So you want to be a doctor” courses are organized and run in the Centre.
There are opportunities for lay, simulated patients to take part in education and training with junior doctors and medical students, particularly in our clinical skills lab.
